How does the form of the poem affect your apprehension and appreciation for it?

The poem "Like you know", by Taylor Mali is creative, entertaining, and well-written. It is also clever and with enough truth behind it to actually make the listener think. It was one of my favorite assigned "readings" so far of the semester. I enjoyed and followed the video of him performing the poem more than the textual representation. I found the text in the other video distracting, intimidating and it made me more apprehensive when first viewing it because of how rapidly it changed and rearranged. I also felt Mali's facial expressions and body language in the video of him reading the poem added to the humor and satirical nature of the piece.

  1. Kindly locate the poet and poem in your analysis. The reader needs to know this. Also note how above analysis this is - which means that you don't actually make contact with an argument. You seem to be writing around and around meaning. It is as if you a pilot mid-flight, circling the runway but never really landing the plane.

  2. Who is the author of the poem? Where can i find the video? I feel i understand visuals such as a video rather than written words that most people end up getting lost in, or somewhat distracted.

  3. Ditto on Prof. Lay's comment. You made a definite decision at the end of the response when you said that you liked the visual version better. Since you did that I am wondering why you said you liked BOTH at the beginning?

  4. Okay so I don't want to say this but yes, the teacher is very very right in saying we need cues to what your talking about. I started reading and even though I just did the same assignment, I was wondering what poem you were talking about! What made you enjoy the video of him performing?

  5. I also enjoyed the performance video—I appreciate Mali's physical movements, gestures, and facial expressions. Without them (i.e., in the typographic remix), part of the meaning is lost.

  6. I agree with the choice of the live performance. I thought the text was distracting and kind of unnecessary in comparison. It didn't really get the point across. But I wonder what you mean by "intimidating"? Why is it intimidating? Give us some more dirt on it. Identify what you have a problem with and give us some more juice about it ;)

    Just more more more!

  7. I liked the performance as well, however i found that the textual video wasn't meant to be read but watched and that the expression that was in the performance is in the text as how each word appears.

  8. Even though both forms of the poem were indeed interesting, I really wanted you to take a stand in this post. I knew what you were talking about from class, but as a writer I felt like you should have been more clear about what you were referring to as well! I personally thought the live performance was stronger, what do you think?

  9. I kind of feel like you put of choosing a side until the very last sentence of the paragraph. I also fell like you were rather wobbly on which side you wanted to choose.

  10. I agree the video of the poem with the words was too distracting, and took away from the poem.
